What do you think about this idea? Are Phone and OS Corps allow/switch these models?

I saw the phone block thing mentioned on nearly every geek and tech site I frequent. How do you convince manufacturers to agree on a standard that frankly looks unattractive? With the added financial disincentive of being an open standard that none could charge royalties for?

It's a Utopian idea and like most that have come before unlikely to materialize.

Not happening any time soon. The technology isn't there and too much in flux still, just compare how far we have come from 2G to LTE within a few decades. Time to market will be worse than Nokia, killing everything involved in sight due to cost. User acceptance is questionable, because most will not pay the premium for the "real" mobile phone swiss army knife but might be content with whatever multi-featured phone Samsung molds together and throws at them. The concept is also opposite to the "planned obsolence" scheme, where e.g. batteries are now glued into your device and can't be changed anymore. Which ensures a steady replacement revenue stream for companies. Which creates jobs. I could go on. Maybe in a 100 years 3D printers will be flexible and powerful enough to print out entire complex electronic devices like an HD2 out over night. Then such a concept might work.
